Mike Blaum, President/Partner
Mike grew up in Lincoln, Illinois and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from Illinois State University in 1989. He started his insurance career as a personal lines agent for Farmers Insurance Group in Chicago's Northern Suburbs.
Mike joined Near North Insurance Brokerage, Inc. (NNIB) in 1992, as a new business sales professional and worked his way to Vice President of the NNIB Healthcare Practice. While working in the Healthcare Practice, Mike specialized in placing medical malpractice insurance for physicians in Illinois. He worked closely with his clients to develop traditional risk transfer programs in the admitted marketplace, such as the development of two hospital based purchasing programs for Chicago Suburban physicians. These programs provided an aggressively priced option, offering broad coverage terms and conditions that were available in a competitive marketplace in the 1990s.
In 2001, Mike joined Aon Risk Services of Illinois, Inc., as the Physician Practice Group Leader of the Midwest Region. While at Aon, Mike managed a practice group responsible for working with over 2,500 physicians in multiple states. As group leader, Mike worked with physicians, physician groups and hospitals in developing both traditional admitted insurance options as well as alternative risk options. During his tenure at Aon, the Midwest practice group developed multiple captive and risk retention group programs necessary during the difficult marketplace in the early part of the decade. In many of these cases an alternative option was needed due to the lack of available markets willing to insure Illinois based invasive physicians.
Mike and his business partner, Connie Calbeck, established MRS in May of 2007, after negotiating the acquisition of the Aon Risk Services, Inc. Chicago-based physician practice.
Since its inception, MRS has continued to grow organically, by adding new staff and new clients. Mike and his wife, Barb, live in Woodridge, Illinois and have two children, Emily and Daniel.
Connie Calbeck, Partner
Connie was born in Chicago, and grew up in the Northwest Suburbs. She earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physics from Illinois State University in 1994. Connie started her insurance career in 1993 working for malpractice insurer, Associated Physicians Insurance Company (APIC), as a Claims Assistant.
The APIC book of business was purchased by ProNational Insurance Company in 1995, where Connie became the Illinois Sales and Marketing Representative. Under this role, Connie worked with ProNational's contracted agents on new business sales for the company, while also working with ProNational's marketing department to promote the company in Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin and Iowa. Connie also acted as Field Underwriter for the agent force. During Connie's employment with ProNational, the company became one of the top three malpractice insurers in Illinois.
In 1997, Connie joined Aon Risk Services of Illinois, Inc., as the Marketing Executive for the Healthcare Practice. Under this role, Connie negotiated malpractice insurance programs for all of Aon's physician clients in the Midwest region. Connie then became Account Executive servicing Aon's national hospital and health care clients. Under this role, Connie negotiated comprehensive insurance programs while also working on the day-to-day insurance needs of each client. During the hard malpractice market in the early and mid 2000's, Connie worked to help secure coverage for clients by developing captive programs for clients who were not finding reasonable options in the commercial marketplace.
Connie and her business partner, Mike Blaum, established Medical Risk Services, Inc. (MRS) in May of 2007 after negotiating the acquisition of the Aon Risk Services, Inc. Chicago-based physician practice. Since its inception, MRS has continued to grow organically by adding new staff and new clients.
Connie and her husband, Mark, live in the western suburbs with their three children and their dog.
John Rasmussen, Senior Vice President
John has been with MRS since its inception, and works with approximately 500 physician clients throughout Illinois and Indiana. He utilizes his vast knowledge of the marketplace and business savvy to design out of the box solutions for his clients.
Prior to joining MRS, John spent three years at Marsh & McLennan, where he handled and brought in multiple client accounts, including both hospital and physician business. His deep knowledge of the insurer marketplace was gained when he worked for ISMIE Mutual from 1997 to 2003. During his time at ISMIE, John underwrote physician professional liability insurance, and was quickly promoted to Underwriting Manager, where he was responsible for the Underwriters and Underwriting Technicians.
Ken Epple, Vice President
Ken provides his physician clients with "one-stop shopping", saving them time and money on their insurance premiums. Ken began his insurance career in 1969, and has insured health care providers since 1980. He spent 10 years at the American Hospital Association before moving onto Classic Insurance Services, Ltd., where he developed new business for another 10 years. He then went to work for Gallagher Healthcare for three years before landing with Medical Risk Services, Inc. Ken lives in Naperville, Illinois with his wife Judy. They have been married 40 years, have two children, and four grandchildren. He enjoys golfing, fishing, and playing tennis.
Laura Ulaszek, Vice President
Laura has been with MRS since its inception in 2007. She consults regularly with executives from the professional liability insurance markets to help create solutions for her physicians. She also works as an advocate for physicians of all specialties, and with her close relationships to the markets, she is able to find the malpractice insurance coverage that is most appropriate for their needs. Laura has been serving Illinois physicians for over ten years, having spent most of her career with Classic Insurance Services, Ltd. before the merger acquisition with Gallagher Healthcare in 2005.
Laura currently resides with her husband, Jeff, and their three children in Naperville, Illinois. She enjoys reading a good book, and watching her children do well in sports and in their studies.
Ryan Sample, Vice President
Ryan Sample has joined Medical Risk Services as of January 15, 2010. He was formerly with Classic Insurance Services, Ltd. and Gallagher Healthcare. Ryan has spent the past 13 years developing new business and building lasting relationships by providing physicians and health care clients exceptional choices and service for their professional liability insurance needs. Ryan has worked with physicians in Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan.
Libby Salerno, Account Executive
Libby joined Medical Risk Services in May of 2009, and brings to the team her entrepreneurial vision and a desire to help physicians increase their insurance ROI. She works as a physician advocate to find the malpractice insurance coverage that is most appropriate for her clients' business goals. When she is not engaged with clients, she can be found networking and educating physicians on the malpractice marketplace and their options via speaking engagements and industry trade shows.
Prior to joining MRS, Libby worked for a multi-line insurance brokerage in downtown Chicago, and was tasked with starting up their Health Care Division. Prior to that, she spent four years running her own clothing line, Little Black Dress, which was sold in boutiques and department stores. The majority of her career in the years before that was spent working her way up the corporate marketing ladder. Her original insurance experience was gained through her four-year internship with the Berkshire Hathaway Homestate Companies in her hometown of Omaha, while she attended the University of Nebraska.
Libby currently resides in downtown Chicago and enjoys traveling, working, networking, and spending time with her fiance and their golden retriever, family, and friends.
Mike Sebens, Account Executive
Mike grew up in Atwood, Illinois and earned an undergraduate degree in Agricultural Economics, and a Masters in Business Administration from the University of Illinois.
Mike started in the insurance business in a multiple lines agency in 1984 and worked primarily with business and professional liability coverages. He also developed the group benefits business department at the agency. In 1996, he founded Integrated Benefits Group. The company specializes in group benefits plans and cost efficiencies for small firms.
